Utility Bill Assistance

City of Mount Airy Utility Donation Fund Assistance Program

The City of Mount Airy Utility Donation Fund Program provides financial help to pay for utility, heating, and energy bills. All of the assistance and donations are collected in partnership with the Salvation Army, and together the city as well as the charity work to provide emergency help to those who qualify.

All of the funds disbursed are only available for City of Mount Airy North Carolina customers who use the local utility company. It is not for paying water or sewer bills. This is also not for any household that does not receive their power or electricity from them. However, anyone can donate to it…no matter where they live or who their utility company is.

The way to donate to the service is through a monthly contribution. It will continue month in and month out until the city is notified to stop it. Any dollar amount is always appreciated. Whether it is $1, or $10 that someone donates each month, 100% of the funds will go towards paying energy bills. One-time contributions can be made as well if someone is more comfortable doing that. The Finance Department at the City collects the donations, and they can start or stop them as needed. The department works closely with the Salvation Army on running this service in the community.

Apply to Salvation Army in Mount Airy – This is the non-profit organization that administers the utility bill assistance program in the community. They accept applications for energy bill help, screen them, and ensure all the money goes to those who most deserve it. Note that 100% of the donations collected go to pay utility bills. No funds are kept by the City of Mount Airy or the Salvation Army.

One of the advantages to the new profit administer the City of Mount Airy Utility Donation Fund Assistance Program is that the case worker can address other needs of the client. As a few dollars to pay for an electric bill will only go so far. In general, the client will need other support as well, such as maybe an application to LIHEAP or information on anti-poverty programs. So all of this can be (and is often addressed) as part of the service in place.

The Donation Fund is only for emergencies as well. The financial assistance is intended to be one-time, short term in nature. It will help keep power on for a very short period, and ideally give the client more time to find longer term solutions. Another benefit is maybe it will keep a struggling family safe, such as by keeping the heat on for a senior citizen or someone with a medical issue.

As noted, all applications are done by the Salvation Army. Call them at 336-786-4075 to apply to the City of Mount Airy Utility Donation Fund Program. If anyone wants to donate, then contributions can be made to a utility bill as noted above. Or one time contributions can be made too, as indicated. The Finance Department at the city can also provide more information on this process if/when needed.
