Utility Bill Assistance

Mississippi LIHEAP program

Low income families in Mississippi may be able to receive financial assistance from LIHEAP. The federal government created and funded Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program offers cash grants and financial assistance to low income residents, with a focus on seniors and families with children. Money can help pay utility bills and other costs and expenses that are involved in heating or cooling homes.

This resource may be the state’s most requested and utilized program. The Division of Community Services, Mississippi Department of Human Services partners with local community action agencies to administer it. A number of qualifications will need to be met by applicants, including income levels and energy usage. The amount of cash benefits paid out will vary based on funding and the applicant’s situation.

Two components of LIHEAP are offered in Mississippi. One is ECIP, or the Energy Crisis Intervention Program. The second is for paying ongoing utility bills. Both can pay for expenses that can be incurred from electricity, natural gas, liquid petroleum propane/butane gas, wood, electricity, and other energy methods.

ECIP can help those people weather related, household related emergencies, or supply shortages, and is offered for those who do have access to direct and/or timely network, and who are out of options. LIHEAP funds may be used to pay utility bills, and they can also be used to purchase air conditioners, fans, blankets, and other energy related products.

If your total household income and other requirements, such as number of family members, qualify for the LIHEAP program, then you may be assisted with Weatherization or bill payment assistance. All funding is limited, and is paid out on a first come-first served basis to needy Mississippi families. A primary beneficiary are low-income households, with special provisions and emphasis made to reach and serve disable/handicapped persons, homebound, and elderly.
