Utility Bill Assistance

Piedmont Electric Project Helping Hand assistance

As a last resort, Piedmont Electric Membership Corporation can provide assistance for paying utility bills from Project Helping Hand. This is a program that is run in partnership with other agencies across North Carolina, and money is raised from the community and all funds will be provided to struggling customers.

This is an emergency service only, and it is limited in scope and capability. It works by the company encouraging both individuals and businesses across its service territory in North Carolina to make a small one time or recurring donation. Then, all of the funds are collected and later distributed to families in a crisis.

People that do donate will be able to make a difference in the life of a less fortunate customer. Everything they contribute will go towards paying utility bills, and not administrative costs. Not only that, but Piedmont Electric Membership Corporation will also usually match a customers donation to make it even more effective.

Any dollar amount is always appreciated. Whether someone make a one time donation of a couple dollars, or decides to round up their monthly utility bill, in either case it will make a difference. Many of the companies own employees even take part in the program and donate a small portion of their pay check to the service. The agencies that run Project Helping Hand will ensure that all donation are used wisely.

In addition, when contributing to the program, there are tax benefits to the donor for making a charitable contribution. While the specifics will vary by each person and their financial situation, in general a deduction can be obtained on both federal and state of North Carolina income taxes.

Project Helping Hand can assist low income families with their utility bills, when they are faced with a crisis. In addition, it can often be combined with other options available from Piedmont Electric, such as shut off protection.

In a typical year, several hundred thousands dollars is paid out, and thousands of customers benefit from it. Piedmont Electric will offer customers short term assistance on utility and heating bills, and it can often even help keep the power on. If a customer needs more long term solutions, referrals may be offered to other programs.

Anyone applying needs to be low income. Many beneficiaries also tend to have a crisis, such as short term reduction in hours, a medical crisis, or maybe the death of a loved one. Donations from the community are used by Piedmont Electric to help in these types of situations. To learn more, call Piedmont Electric Membership Corporation.
