Utility Bill Assistance

Boone County H.E.L.P. utility bill assistance

In an effort to help struggling families across the Boone County service territory, the company (along with partner agencies) created the HELP utility bill assistance programs. The donations made to it, from the community as well as corporate funds, allow hundreds of families that are facing a crisis to keep their power on. It is an annual allotment.

In regards to the donation process, the funds come from many sources. Each year there may be dozens of different companies that help bring in money. Those funds are combined with customer Round Up or one-time contributions, donations from employees, and matching funds from corporate coffers.

All of the money collected goes directly to paying utility bills…100% of the funds do in fact. There are zero administrative costs, as Boone County pays them for the Heat Energy and Light Program. Not only that, but the donations made can often lead to a deduction on the donors income taxes, as it is a charitable contribution. So Boone County H.E.L.P. not only helps someone pay their energy bills, but it also is a way to give back to the region/donate to the needy.

Contributions can be made in any fashion. One time as well as recurring donations may be used. Not only will every single dollar help by keeping the energy assistance program running, but the funds stay local. This is where the Boone County H.E.L.P. gets the neighbor helping neighbor concept.

Who does this energy bill program assist?

Applications to the Boone Heat Energy and Light Program are for low income families that are struggling with paying their utility bills. The service is run in partnership with local social service agencies, charities, and other organizations. They will process the applications and screen for eligibility.

When seeking funds from the program, keep in mind it is not the same as a government benefit program. This one relies on donations, is only for customers of Boone County H.E.L.P., and the Heat Energy and Light Program resource also is for a crisis only. It is not for a long term subsidy, like LIHEAP or weatherization may be. Those programs tend to focus on families living in or near poverty and that need more annual/long term aid.

Instead the grants from the service are paid for using contributions from the community, employees or the company, as well as businesses. All of these groups work together in an effort to ensure the less fortunate among the region have power. They work to keep the electric or lights on, help with paying for heat or gas, and address other utility needs.

When applying, bring proof of income, residency, and copies of utility bills. The service is for a crisis only, so a disconnect notice for the current utility account is needed. Also, a reason for the financial hardship may be required as well.

Boone County H.E.L.P. can be combined with other aid too, such as grants from LIHEAP. All of the funds can be used to help pay utility bills for a short period of time. Or, if the donations are low, there may only be partial payments allowed to the customer.
